Playing the Ss - Skyborn and ShellShock Live

Today has been a long day and I'm looking forward to getting to bed... but not before I write an actual blog. I played some Skyborn this evening and it's really a super cute game. Some people say that it reminds them of early-day Final Fantasy games but since I haven't played those, I'm going to go with something I know. Skyborn feels like Golden Sun, and since I LOVED the Golden Sun games, I latched onto this one immediately. I like the characters, the storyline, the gameplay, and the music is really good too. Your main character is Claret Spencer, a human mechanic living in a steampunk world after a war between humans and the winged skyborn (the skyborn won). Now the humans are (somewhat) treated as inferior, and human-skyborn hybrids are arrested (as are those who help to conceal them). Claret is very happy being a simple mechanic, when suddenly her world is turned upside down, someone she loves is put at risk of death, and she has to make fast decisions while going on adventures and taking risks that she never would have imagined. That's a simplified synopsis, and I haven't finished the game so an incomplete one at that, but it gives you a general idea of what to expect should you decide to give it a try. Which you should.

However, as much as I am truly enjoying the game, I do have a couple of complaints. First off, the fights. All of the mobs that you see on the map are basically the same - either a skyborn sentry (and then you fight one or multiple skyborn) or a little purple dragon (and then you fight anything they can come up with - plant creatures, cat demons, jellyfish, elementals). I wish that the mobs that you encountered on the world map were reflective of what you'll actually be fighting. The little placeholder dragons are cute and all, but it's a bit of a drag that they're all you see. And as for the fights themselves... the mobs don't move. You basically have an image of what you are fighting, and your team in boxes at the bottom of the screen. I'm sure this was done on purpose, and I know a lot of games utilize this combat "method" (like GranBlue Fantasy) but I find it super boring. I feel like combat should be exciting and that kind of combat just isn't... to me at least.

My second complaint is about how the game displays - you have two options. Tiny box on the screen which makes it hard to really see what you're doing, or full-screen mode which is very slightly blurry. I know, why not just resize the tiny box so that you have a bigger one? Right? Except no. You can't. It's locked at that size. I've gotten used to playing it full-screen at this point, but meh. They could have at least offered players a way to resize it themselves.

But anyhow. Those are my only issues with the game, and they're pretty minor really. Matters of preference rather than game-breaking things that would normally put people off. Overall, it's really good and I would still give it a high score (if I was scoring things). Instead I'll just put it out there that it's worth a try. Hopefully the story continues to be good and I don't end up eating my words later, but I don't really see that happening. So far the characters and story have been solid.

And now, the spam. All the screenshots, and a gameplay video. Enjoy - the writing portion of this blog will continue after this small break for eye-candy. Well, eye-candy of a game type.

I'm loving the dialogue in the game, and who else gets The Lion King reference? Anyone? Just me? That made me giggle and I'm so happy I got a screenshot of it. My love of Disney is real people.

And moving on. After Skyborn I picked up ShellShock for a bit. I ran through a few missions and recorded one of them. I may record a couple more and add them to this post once I'm done - it's going to depend on how late it is. For now, I'm still enjoying the game. It's fun to try and hit the tanks and targets, and I love that I can play singleplayer so that there's no real pressure to perform. I'm basically just challenging myself and I'm 100% okay with that. There are some missions that are harder than others, and I may have to repeat them several times before I can complete them successfully, but I do it. And I think that's probably the most important thing in all of this. I fail and I keep trying, and I don't mind that I'm failing, and I'm enjoying myself as I figure out why I failed in the first place. It's not about winning, it's about learning and getting better. Plus it's colourful, and you can kill tanks with disco lights and cats and rainbows. What's not to like?

In any case. That's my gaming for the night. <3 Sweet dreams everyone.
